Rufous Hummingbird

The first rufous hummingbirds of the year arrived in Estes this weekend. They don't nest here - they're only passing through (on their way south already!) but they're the most entertaining birds we get. For a couple days, they harass the broadtail hummingbirds, which arrived before Memorial Day and have their territories already established. Then the broadtails figure it out and start double-teaming the newcomers. One broadtail will swoop by and lead the rufous on a chase around the neighborhood, and another will come in for a leisurely drink at the feeder. Then they trade off. It's one of the most fun wildlife shows all summer.
